LED Resistor Calculator
LED Resistor Calculator
The LED Resistor Calculator helps you calculate the correct resistor value for LEDs connected in series or parallel. This tool also calculates resistor power dissipation and recommended resistor wattage for safe operation.
It supports common LED colors, adjustable forward voltage, LED current, and multiple LED configurations.
Why Do LEDs Need a Resistor?
LEDs are current-driven devices. Without a resistor, excessive current can flow through the LED and permanently damage it.
A resistor limits the current and protects the LED while ensuring proper brightness and safe operation.
The standard LED resistor formula is:
\( R = \frac{V_{supply} – V_f}{I} \)Where:
- R = Required resistor value
- Vsupply = Supply voltage
- Vf = LED forward voltage
- I = LED current
LED Series vs Parallel Connections
Series LEDs
In a series connection:
- LED forward voltages add together
- Current remains the same
Series wiring is efficient and commonly used with higher supply voltages.
Parallel LEDs
In a parallel connection:
- Voltage remains the same
- Total current increases
Parallel LED circuits require proper current calculation to avoid uneven brightness.
Resistor Power Dissipation
The calculator also determines resistor power dissipation using:
\( P=I^2R \)This helps you choose the correct resistor wattage rating such as:
- 1/4W
- 1/2W
- 1W
- 2W
Using an undersized resistor may cause overheating or failure.
LED Color Forward Voltage Reference
Typical LED forward voltages:
| LED Color | Typical Vf |
|---|---|
